Summer Maintenance

The biggest problem that pond owners come accross during the early summer months is algae control. Listed below are the top five Algae control methods for a pond and a pond-less.

Top Methods of controlling Algae:

1. Spring Cleanout. This is important for several reasons, but the most important is to rid your pond of all the sludge and excess amounts amounts of nutrietns and lack of beneficial bacteria. By performing a cleanout, you 'll replace the nutrient-rich water with clean water that is ready for bacteria to colonize. Cleaning a pond in spring simulates the normal flushing action that lakes fed by streams and rivers experience during heavy spring rains.

2. Add beneficial Bacteria daily for the first couple of weeks after your spring cleaning. Continue to add weekly doses throughout the summer to ensure a healthy, natural pond.

3. Place Barely bags in the biological filters immediately after the spring cleaning.

4. Fertilize Aquatic Plants. The more your plants become established the more nutrients they will consume, leaving less for algae. Plus, lilies provide wonder shade from the sun, reducing algae growth.

5. Don't over feed your fish. Excess nutrients from fish food will speed up algae growth.

6. Use Algae-Off: it is effective against string algae only. It is formulatd to "lock up" all the available calcium in the system. Since algae is dependent upon calcium to create its structue, preventing the algae from absorbing calcium forces the string algae to come brittle, crack, and fall of the rocks.
